The Silk Road and Silkworm Culture
The Silk Road stands as a historical testament to the flourishing prosperity of China's silkworm industry. As far back as the Neolithic period, the oldest known silkworm cocoon was discovered at a painted pottery site in Shanxi — a finding that speaks to the ancient and deeply significant role of silk culture throughout Chinese history. In this course, children will explore the historical significance and cultural meaning of silk, discover the differences between wild and domestic silkworms, and take a scientific deep dive into the complete life cycle of the silkworm — from egg and larva to pupa and adult moth — as well as the remarkable process of mating and egg-laying. At the end of the course, each child will use silkworm cocoons to create their very own unique and beautiful artwork by hand — and through this hands-on experience, discover the enduring beauty of a traditional craft that has spanned thousands of years!
