Rubbing Techniques
Rubbing is considered a precursor to the art of printing. In ancient times, this technique was used to faithfully reproduce and preserve precious stone carvings — capturing intricate inscriptions and patterns for generations to come. Over time, it evolved into a broader method for duplicating objects and transmitting information at scale. Though rooted in skilled craftsmanship, rubbing is a technique woven into the fabric of everyday life, often found in places we least expect. In this course, students will explore the art of rubbing through a variety of materials, tools, and techniques. They will experience the traditional rubbing process firsthand and use everyday materials and finely crafted molds to create their very own one-of-a-kind rubbing artworks.
