The Legend of Indigo Dyeing

Drawing from the natural plant known as "indigo woad," every step of the process — from cultivating and preparing the dye to dyeing the cloth — reflects the deep reverence and care that people of old held for the natural world. In its quiet simplicity lies a unique blend of human warmth and artistic beauty.In this course, children will explore the cultural significance and deeper spirit of indigo dyeing, tracing the historical development and rise and fall of this remarkable craft. They will learn the process and techniques of fabric dyeing, and admire a variety of exquisite indigo-dyed works. At the end of the course, each child will create their very own one-of-a-kind indigo-dyed bandana — leaving behind a beautiful, personal mark in the interplay of deep and pale shades of blue and white!
